Arts and crafts at the beach.

Es sind nicht mehr nur Holzschnitzer aus dem Volk der Makonde, die unermüdlich - meist vor Hütten am Weg sitzen und schnitzen. Hier ist gerade eine große Ujamaa-Figur in Arbeit. Ujamaa steht für Familie, Gemeinschaft, Einheit, auch Sozialismus auf afrikanisch, wie ihn Nyerere versuchte.

It's a common sight to see members of the Makonde tribe sitting in front of their huts all day carving small wooden figures. But they also do wood carving on a larger scale, like this Ujamaa figure. Ujamaa stands for family, community, unity : also for African socialism as practiced by Nyerere.
